Cafe Azul - Caracas de Ayer has been family owned and operated since 2009. We strive to serve the most authentic Venezuelan food in the Washington DC area. Located 2 miles from Washington D.C. in Hyattsville, Maryland. Our cafe is centrally located and is 30 minutes from Baltimore, Annapolis, Rockville, and Arlington.

What is an Arepa? Arepas are popular in Colombia and Venezuela. An Arepa is made from scratch daily. Arepas are white corn cakes which are soft and smooth within, split in half, with a golden crispiness on the outside and filled with a variety of tasty fillings. Arepas are the center of every meal in Venezuela and can be eaten as a snack or meal. Arepas are gluten free.

What is a Cachapa? A Cachapa is a large, sweet corn pancake with fresh white venezuelan cheese filled in between. The venezuelan cheese is homemade and it's slightly salty which offsets the sweetness of the corn cake. Cachapas are gluten free. In Colombia, Cachapas are referred to as Arepas de Choclo.

What is an Empanada? Empanadas are popular all over South America. An Empanada is a baked dough turnover pastry filled with seasoned meats, veggies, or sweets.

What is an Hallaca? A Hallaca is the Venezuelan version of a Mexican Tamale. The Hallaca is a mixture of beef, pork, chicken, olives, raisins and capers wrapped in cornmeal dough, folded within plantain leaves, tied with string, and steamed afterwards. Hallacas are gluten free.

What is a Cachito? A Cachito is a crescent bread roll stiffed with chopped baked ham. Cachitos are a great as a snack in between meals or to have for breakfast.

What is a Tequeño? A Tequeño is a spear of baked bread dough with delicious artisan queso blanco or guava cheese in the middle.
